The sea – eternally changing, tender and severe, warm and freezing, calm and raging, sparkling and dark, concealing unsolved mysteries in its depths, became the main character of works by composers from different countries, in different styles and genres.
Romantic Scarlet Sails inspired composer Vladimir Jurowski to creating a ballet which was successfully on at the Bolshoy Theatre many years. Galina Ulanova and Olga Lepeshinskaya performed the main part of Assol.
Debussy wrote: “The sea is everything of the most musical…”. The Sea is the major composition among Debussy’s orchestral compositions. The author called it “three symphonic sketches”. This term does not mean fragmentariness, it shows connection between music and painting as it is typical of other composer’s works. “Three sketches” are parts of the entire, no wonder that some analysts consider The Sea as a symphony consisting of slow part, scherzo and final.
Vaughn Williams is one of the most outstanding composers of the first part of the XX century who played an important part in renewing interest in British classical music. His heritage is rather wide: six operas, three ballets, nine symphonies, cantatas, oratorios, compositions for piano, organ and chamber ensembles. Works by Williams are distinguished by plot immensity, master voice-leading, and original orchestrating. Vaughn Williams is one of the founders of new English composers’ school – so called “English musical renaissance”.
Olga Senderskaya graduated from St. Petersburg Conservatory majoring in vocal (class of People’s Artist of Russia Olga Kondina) and Young Opera Singers Academy under Mariinsky Theatre (Artistic Director Larisa Gergieva) as well. Winner of the 1 Prize of the International Gerda Lissner Opera Singers’ Competition (New York, 2008). Diploma winner of the International Klaudia Taev Opera Singers’ Competition (Estonia, 2005), the International Wilhelm Stenhammar Opera Singers’ Competition (Sweden, 2006). She gave recitals in Saint Petersburg, Paris, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Berlin, Vienna. In 2009 participated in recording on Belgian label Fuga Libera (Moscow Chamber Orchestra “Musica Viva”, romances by Glinka).
Marek Kalbus studied at the "Hanns Eisler" academy of music. In 2000 Marek Kalbus became prizewinner at the International Belvedere Competition for Opera Singers in Vienna. his international career began at the Teatro Carlo Felice Genoa. Kalbus performed at such well-known venues as Teatro Massimo Palermo, Teatro Dal Verme Milan, Konzerthaus Berlin, International Arts Centre deSingel in Antwerp, Beethoven Hall Bonn, Philharmonie Berlin, etc. One of his favourite roles is the Salieri in the opera "Mozart and Salieri" composed by Rimski-Korsakow for Fjeodor Shaljapin. The singer’s repertoire also includes parts of Commendatore (Don Giovanni), Sarastro (The magic Flute), Chief of Police (Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District), Sobakin (The Tsar’s Bride), bass parts in “St. Matthew Passion” by J.S. Bach, and Requiem by G. Verdi. In 2008 Marek Kalbus sang in a new production of “The Legend Of The Invisible City Of Kitezh” at Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, (a co-production with the Bolshoi Theatre Moscow). Among the singer’s CD-recordings are premiere recording of Prokofiev's Hamlet, and Boris Godunov featuring the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra.
