C. Orff. Carmina Burana
Peculiarity of performing this legendary cantata is combination of music with vivid visual images – large-scale video projections displaying magic pictures which fill all space of the hall. Following original conception of the author Moscow City Symphony Orchestra “Russian Philharmonic” and “360 PROJECT” tried to reunite musical canvas of cantata with visual images of the epoch using paintings by Sandro Botticelli, Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel, Lucas Cranach.
Carmina Burana is musical masterpiece of the XX century and the most famous composition by Carl Orff. It is really magic music which captivates by its vivid imagery, amazing rhythm element, mix of slight irony and tender lyricism, epic magnitude, munificence of colours. Orff’s music is the main character of the performance. Both musicians and listeners fall beneath its hypnotic influence since first measures.
Songs of Beuern (it’s the translation of Carmina Burana) are the monument to secular art of the Renaissance. Cantata plotline is vague and associative. Song and orchestra parts represent contrast scenes from diverse and miscellaneous life. One sings of the sweets of life, happiness, unrestrained fun, beauty of nature in spring, passionate love; another one – hard life of monks and vagrant students. But the basic philosophical core is contemplation about changeful and puissant human destiny – Fortune.
Honoured Artist of Russia Elvira Hokhlova (soprano) – soloist of “Novaya Opera” Moscow Theatre. The singer’s repertoire includes parts of Violetta (Traviata by Verdi), Gilda (Rigoletto, by Verdi), Jeanne (Jeanne D’Arc by Verdi), Louise (Louise Miller by Verdi), Lucia (Lucia di Lammermoor by Donizetti), Donna Anna (Don Juan by Mozart), Olga (Rusalka, by Dargomyzhsky), etc. Cantata-oratorial compositions are a big part of the singer’s creative work. The singer took part in foreign performances: Iolanta (Monte-Carlo Theatre, 2001), Norma, Players, Lucia di Lammermoor (Germany, Ulm and Dusseldorf, 2003 – 2006), Rigoletto (II Opera Festival La Palma, Spain, 2005), etc.
Leonid Bomstein (tenor) – soloist of State Academic Bolshoy Theatre of Russia. The singer’s repertoire includes parts of Astrologer (The Golden Cockerel by Rimsky-Korsakov), Ismaele (Nabucco by Verdi), Yurodiviy (Boris Godunov by Mussorgsky), Rudolph (La bomeme by Puccini), etc. In 2004 he performed the part of the Nose in the opera The Nose by D. Shostakovich staged by Bard-festival (USA). In September-October 2011 performed the part of the Nose (stage director Peter Stain) in Opernhaus (Zurich, Switzerland). In November 2009 took part in performance of opera Wozzeck by A. Berg in the Bolshoy Theatre. In November 2010 he sang all tenor parts in opera recital of The Child and the Spells by M. Ravel, staged at the Bolshoy Theatre within the Year of France in Russia.
Honoured Artist of Russia Andrey Baturkin (baritone) – soloist of K. Stanislavsky and V. Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theatre. Since 1994 he performs at the stage of the “Helikon-Opera” Moscow Theatre. He participated in performances of the Bolshoy Theatre, Paris National Opera, Landes Theatre (Linze, Austria), Stadttheater (Klagenfurt, Austria), Monte-Carlo Opera. He toured at South Korea, Latvia, France, Great Britain, Netherlands, Austria, Italy, USA, Japan. The leading parts: Onegin (Eugene Onegin), Figaro (The Barber of Seville), Eletsky (The Queen of Spades), Valentine (Faust). He participated in the records of Stabat Mater by Karol Szymanowsky, opera Feast in Time of Plague by Cui, compositions by Taneev, Prokofiev, Shostakovich as well. Since 2007 he collaborates with “Moscow City Opera”.
