To the 140th anniversary of Sergey Rachmaninoff
Sergey Rachmaninoff is a composer of bright original gift, a pianist of genius who had no equal among contemporaries, outstanding conductor – “tripersonal divine being”. “I could never decide what my real mission is – composer, pianist, or conductor. There are moments when it seems to me that I should be only a composer, sometimes I suppose I’m a pianist only” , - Rachmaninoff wrote late in life. As a pianist Rachmaninoff was unanimously recognized as one of the greatest performers of piano art. His name was ranged with the names of F. Liszt and A. Rubenstein. His virtuoso skill was boundless, but he never put it to the foreground and entirely dedicated it to content artistic plot. Concerto is favourite genre to which the composer appealed during his lifetime. Creation of 4 piano concertos and Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini which is often called the Fifth Concerto, covered 51-year period of composer’s life. The First Concerto was written in 1891, the Second – in 1901, the Third – in 1909, the Fourth – in 1926 (the second edition of this concerto dates back to 1928, the third one was finished in 1941), Rhapsody – in 1943.
