To the 200th Anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi.

Requiem is one of the most outstanding compositions by Verdi, which stands in the same row with his best operas and at the same time is his only major composition not for opera theatre. Death of Italian poet and writer, author of the novel Engagement Alessandro Manzoni was the reason for creating Requiem. Verdi admired Manzoni and

Requeim by Verdi was performed for the first time on May 22, 1874 in Milan, at St. Mark’s Church conducted by the author and with participation of grand choir, orchestra and the best Italian singers. In a few days Requiem was repeated in the Milan opera house La Scala, then it was performed in Paris, Vienna, Petersburg. Requeim was a great success everywhere.

The first huge movement of Requiem is called “Requiem aeternam” (“Eternal Peace”) and plays a role of prologue. In the second movement “Dies Irae” (The Day of Ire)Verdi embodies profound sufferings of a person and his struggle with menacing hostile forces. Pacific and pure peace and lyrical contemplation prevail in the third movement “Domine” (“Lord”). In the fourth movement “Sanctus” (“Saint”) in a way magnificent and skillfully composed polyphonic piece the composer sings of artistic power of creation. In the fifth movement “Agnus Dei” (The Lamb of God”) Verdi creates simple and morally pure musical image. The sixth movement “Lux aeterna” (“Eternal Light”) presents itself as relatively small intermezzo, which prepares for grandiose final of Requiem. The Final named “Lidera me” (“Liberate me”) is majestic musical composition which serves as the result of dramatic development. Along with psychological deepness and emotional musical language, theatrical imagery, splendid melodism and creative colourness which makes this composition closer to the best latest Verdi’s operas are inherent in Requiem.
